Concert Fun!
Remember piano lessons and "The Spinning Song" by Albert Elmenrich? (Even if you didn't remember the composer's name, the music undoubtedly is familiar.) Using nonsense syllables, this SATB choral setting by Greg Gilpin would make an enjoyable addition to a concert program. "Va da va da va da . . . ba da!"

"...I shall wear purple with a red hat..."
We've all seen the ladies with the purple dresses and red hats! This phenomenon was inspired by the Jenny Joseph poem which has been delightfully set to music for SSAA voices and piano by Ruth Watson Henderson.

New and Interesting!!!

HAL LEONARD

"Alice's Theme" (by Danny Elfman) from Disney's new Tim Burton film "Alice in Wonderland" will soon be available in choral settings by Mac Huff for 2-Part, SAB, and SATB voices. There is also a ShowTrax CD and an arrangement for chamber ensemble.

HAL LEONARD (BOOSEY & HAWKES)

"A Parliament of Owls" by Karl Jenkins celebrates some unusual collective nouns in three movements titled "Irresistable and noisy," "Quietly sitting still," and "Monstrous mayhem." This 17-minute work is written for SATB voices, piano 4 hands, saxophone, and percussion (3 players).

KJOS

"One-Minute Sight-Singing, Books 1 and 2," for all ages. Incorporates Curwen hand symbols. By Ronald Slabbinck and Holly Shaw-Slabbinck.

On orders placed now through May 31, 2009, Dale will offer these volumes at a 10% discount, or $150.00 for the entire set of seven volumes (more than 20% off). Delivery in June. Rich gives these his highest recommendation!

from the Ireland Book of Common Prayer
A Christmas Blessing "May the joy of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, the worship of the wise men, and the peace of the Christ child be yours...," in a gentle musical setting by Philip Stopford written for performance at Belfast Cathedral, is available in both SATB & SSA settings from Hal Leonard.

Our Most Popular Composer for Organ
We can't keep Canadian Denis Bedard's organ works in stock due to their incredible popularity! His compositions are delightfully contemporary with a French flavor. We now have his popular "Toccata" (from the Suite). A partial list: "Variations on Old Hundredth," "Fantaisie on Ein' feste Burg," "Meditation on O Filii et Filiae," "Variations on Christus Vincit," "Quatre Pieces en forme de Messe," "Six Interludes," "Triptyque," "Cinq Pieces funebres," and "Festive Toccata." Rich's personal favorites are the "Deux Noels" and "Variations on In Dulci Jubilo." There are also a "Sonata for Organ and Alto Saxophone," a TTBB setting of "Our Father," "Duet Suite for Organ and Piano," etc. Last but not least is his "Cat Suite" (for organ) with movements including "Prrrelude" and "Toc-cat-a." Sample some of his creativity on youtube!

Discover Moravian Music Treasures
An extraordinary--but largely unknown--resource is the vast treasure of early American (and contemporary American!) music of the Moravians. These Europeans arrived in America in the mid-1700's and not only brought with them their instruments and music, but continued to import and compose. (Choral editions, while published with keyboard accompaniments, in most cases have accompaniments for strings and winds.) Try these!

Johann Christian Geisler, "The Fruit of the Spirit Is Love" for SATB voices, organ, and flute.

Woldemar Voullaire, "Blessed Are the Pure of Heart" for SATB voices and organ; reminiscent of Brahms.

Ernst Immanuel Erbe, "Seventeen Organ Chorales" make useful short organ voluntaries as well as excellent teaching pieces. Tunes include "Allein Gott in der Hoh' sei Ehr'," "Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort," "Herzliebster Jesu," "O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig," "Nun ruhen alle Walder," "Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan" (a trio), etc. Each hymn setting is complemented by a setting of the chorale, many including examples of the now-forgotten practice of playing interludes between lines within a stanza.

The most delightful new Christmas piece we've seen so far is Chuck Bridwell's "Various Themes on "Fa-La-La." While the verses are sung to the familiar "Deck the Halls" tune, each "Fa-La-La" chorus utilizes a different and well-known classical theme: Rossini's "William Tell Overture," Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony," Strauss's "Blue Danube," and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." Rich's Organ Recommendations
Rich recommends:

Andrew Clarke: Chorale Prelude on "Munich"

Denis Bedard: Deux Noels (Noel Huron; Il est ne, le divin Enfant)

Douglas E. Wagner: Toccata on "That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright" in the collection From Death to Life Eternal

Sam Batt Owens: Credo in unum Deum based on [the hymn tune] Showalter, "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." A rollicking yet tasteful postlude, second of three hymn settings published as "Missa Brevis for Organ." The other movements are settings of "Love Lifted Me" and "Just As I Am" (subtitled "Agnus Dei: An Altar Call in Blue").

Worship Without Words

Best New Music for Children's Choirs
New and highly recommended from Choristers Guild:

Children will enjoy the recurring clapping motive in Cindy Berry's delightful "Christmas Is Here, Sing Noel" for unison choir (with an optional descant on the last stanza). Range just over an octave. "Jesus is the greatest gift of all."

Based on the parables of the lost sheep, lost coin, and prodigal son, "Rejoice With Me!" by Vicki Hancock Wright is an exceptional combination of melodic writing and piano accompaniment, combined with an exciting (don't consider it optional!) handbell part. Unison with optional divisi on the final cadence.

And from Beckenhorst Press:

The Moravian text "I Am Jesus' Little Lamb" is beautifully set to music by Mark Shepperd for two-part treble voices, piano, and flute. Briefly quotes "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us."

Best of New Choral Literature! RECOMMENDED!
PSALM OF PRAISE by James E. Clemens (Kjos) is an energetic setting of Psalm 81:1-3 for SATB choir (with some unison and two-part sections) accompanied by tambourine and conga or djembe. "Sing to God a psalm of praise; shout for joy to the God of Jacob! Blow the ram's horn, strike the tambourine; praise the Lord with music and dancing!"

I WILL SET HIS DOMINION IN THE SEA from the catalog of Paraclete Press: "Bruce Neswick uses vivid colors to create the setting of this psalm text. A brilliant organ toccata accompaniment, utilizing the solo reed of the organ, is the framework for the opening and closing portions of this anthem. The choral parts are very accessible with occasional divisi, and combined with the organ accompaniment, communicate a sense of majesty."

SAINTS BOUND FOR HEAVEN is an exceptionally fine collection for TTBB choirs from Beckenhorst Press. Howard Helvey's masterful blend of piano and male voices is evident in five arrangements: "Behold, the Best, the Greatest Gift," "Cross of Jesus, Cross of Sorrow," "On Jordan's Stormy Banks," "Saints Bound for Heaven," and "There Is a Fountain."

New! Reconstructed Improvisation by Louis Vierne
Newly reconstructed from a recorded improvisation of Louis Vierne, and soon to be in stock at Dale, transcribed by Jean-Michel Louchard. Four pages, anticipated price, $9.75.

"This visually evocative music speaks most to those who have often thought Louis Vierne appropriate for the solemn services of Notre-Dame. It respects the grandiose environment of the cathedral, adapts itself to the majestic resonance of the instrument, while demonstrating its sensitive nature."
